Serve, Pass, Attack: the 5 Volleyball Stats Every Coach Should Track

There are dozens of statistics you could track in volleyball, and professional teams often record almost every touch of the ball. For most coaches, though, that level of detail isn't realistic or even necessary. A small set of well-chosen stats can tell you almost everything you need to know about how your team is performing. In this article we focus on five core volleyball stats that every coach should track, explain why each one matters and show how they fit together to give you a clear, practical picture of your team.

Stat One: Serve Errors

Serve errors are free points for your opponent, and they add up quickly. A team that misses five or six serves per set is giving away a huge advantage. Tracking serve errors helps you see whether your serving is aggressive but controlled, or simply inconsistent. It also shows which players need more work. Some coaches accept a certain number of errors in exchange for tougher serves, and that's a valid strategy, but you can only manage that balance if you know the numbers. Serve errors are often the easiest stat to improve through focused practice, which makes them a great starting point.

Stat Two: Aces and Serve Pressure

The flip side of serve errors is serving effectiveness. Aces are the obvious measure, but they don't tell the whole story. A tough serve that forces a poor pass is almost as valuable as an ace, because it makes the opponent's attack predictable. Some coaches track serve pressure by noting how often the opponent is forced out of system after a serve. Combined with serve errors, this gives you a balanced view of your serving game. Together, these first two stats tell you whether your team is using its serve as a weapon or simply putting the ball in play.

Stat Three: Passing Quality

Serve receive passing is often the foundation of a team's success. A simple rating system, such as scoring each pass from zero to three based on how easily the setter can run the offense, gives you a clear average. If your passing average is low, your setter struggles and your hitters get poor sets. Tracking passing quality by player and by rotation helps you spot weak links and adjust your serve receive formation. Many coaches find that improving passing has a bigger impact on results than any other change, which is why this stat deserves regular attention.

Stat Four and Five: Kills and Attack Errors

The final two stats focus on attacking. Kills show how often your hitters score directly, while attack errors show how often they give points away through hitting out, into the net or getting blocked. Together with total attempts, they let you calculate attack efficiency: kills minus errors, divided by attempts. This number tells you far more than kills alone, because it rewards consistency. A hitter with fewer kills but very few errors may be more valuable than a flashy player who makes lots of mistakes. These stats help you make smarter decisions about who to set in key moments.

Bringing the Five Stats Together

These five stats, which are serve errors, serve pressure, passing quality, kills and attack errors, cover the core of the game. Tracked consistently, they show where your team is winning and losing points. You don't need expensive equipment to record them, just a simple and reliable method. Koach lets you track these numbers live and connect them to your roster, lineups and practice plans. If you're looking for a practical way to start recording the stats that matter most, this app gives coaches an easy starting point that fits naturally into match day without turning it into a data project.
