Australia’s alcoholic drinks sector is experiencing gradual change as health awareness, economic pressures and evolving consumer preferences influence purchasing behaviour. According to the Australia alcoholic drinks report from Vyansa Intelligence, the sector was valued at USD 32.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 38.13 billion by 2032, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.13% during 2026–2032. The outlook reflects a mature sector in which moderate expansion is expected alongside a shift towards lower-alcohol products, convenient formats and changing consumption occasions.

Health Awareness Influences Consumption Patterns

Health and wellbeing awareness is an important influence on Australia's alcoholic drinks sector. Consumers, particularly younger adults, are increasingly moderating alcohol intake or considering low- and non-alcoholic alternatives. This is contributing to demand for products that offer familiar flavours and social convenience while containing less or no alcohol.

The broader consumption context supports the relevance of this trend. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reports that 77% of Australians aged 14 and over consumed alcohol during the previous year in 2022–2023. However, the amount of alcohol available for consumption per capita declined from 10.5 litres in 2022–2023 to 9.8 litres in 2023–2024. These figures provide context for the report's observation that consumption moderation is influencing product development.

Manufacturers are responding with low-strength beers, non-alcoholic spirits and alcohol-free RTDs. Low-sugar and low-carbohydrate formulations are also receiving attention from consumers interested in products that align with active lifestyles. This shift is encouraging producers to broaden their portfolios rather than relying exclusively on conventional alcoholic beverages.

Beer Retains a Significant Share

Beer accounted for approximately 30% of Australia's alcoholic drinks sector in 2025, making it the largest individual category by value in the report's segmentation. The category is projected to record a volume CAGR of around 1.24% during 2026–2032. Its affordability and established role as an everyday beverage support demand across both on-trade and off-trade channels.

Economic pressures are influencing how consumers approach beer purchases. Value-conscious buyers may favour more affordable products, while premium beer can face slower growth when inflation and household expenditure constraints affect discretionary spending. This creates a competitive environment in which price, availability and product positioning remain important.

Innovation in low-carbohydrate and healthier beer variants is another factor supporting the category. These products provide alternatives for consumers seeking to moderate certain ingredients without moving away from beer altogether. Although volume growth is expected to remain measured, beer's broad consumer base and distribution reach are likely to sustain its position.

Ready-to-Drink Beverages Offer Convenience

Ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages are identified as one of the more dynamic categories in Australia's alcoholic drinks sector. Their convenience, lower alcohol-by-volume options and variety of flavours appeal to younger adult consumers looking for accessible alternatives to traditional drinks.

Product development is expanding beyond standard formulations. Low-sugar versions and higher-strength options provide different propositions within the category, allowing producers to address varied preferences. RTDs also benefit from packaging formats that are suited to portability and different social occasions.

The category's development reflects a wider shift towards convenience and choice. Consumers can select products according to flavour, strength and occasion, while manufacturers can differentiate their offerings through formulation and packaging. RTDs therefore represent an area of innovation within a sector where overall volume growth is expected to be relatively modest.

Off-Trade Retail Remains the Main Sales Channel

Off-trade channels accounted for approximately 60% of Australia's alcoholic drinks sector in 2025. This includes purchases through liquor stores, supermarkets and online retail platforms. The channel's leading position reflects the importance of convenience, value and home consumption in consumer purchasing behaviour.

Economic uncertainty and constraints on discretionary expenditure can encourage consumers to purchase beverages for consumption at home rather than spend on social occasions at licensed venues. Off-trade outlets provide access to a broad range of products and price points, supporting comparison and value-led purchasing.

Online services, including click-and-collect and home delivery, are also contributing to retail convenience. These options allow consumers to access products without relying solely on physical store visits. Retailers such as Liquorland and Thirsty Camel are identified in the report as strengthening their positions through loyalty programmes and online engagement.

The report also notes that older consumers with greater disposable incomes contribute to demand for premium products purchased through off-trade channels. This illustrates the diversity of the retail customer base, with value-oriented purchasing and premium at-home consumption occurring within the same distribution channel.

On-Trade Activity and Social Experiences

Although off-trade retail holds the larger share, on-trade venues remain relevant to the sector's development. Bars, restaurants and other licensed premises provide settings for social consumption and product discovery. The report identifies government policy changes in New South Wales and Victoria aimed at revitalising nightlife and easing certain business limitations as factors that may support on-trade activity.

These developments could encourage investment in hospitality venues and create additional social consumption occasions. For beverage producers, on-trade outlets can provide opportunities to introduce products and build consumer familiarity through venue-based experiences.

However, the wider trend towards moderation and value-conscious spending remains relevant to hospitality operators. The sector's development will depend partly on how venues respond to consumers seeking different types of experiences, including lighter beverages and convenient options.

Local and Flavoured Spirits Create Opportunities

The report identifies local and flavoured spirits innovation as an opportunity for Australian producers. Distilleries are using local ingredients, cultural references and familiar flavours to create products with distinctive identities. These offerings can appeal to consumers interested in authenticity, novelty and a connection with local production.

Flavour development also provides a way for producers to differentiate their products in a competitive environment. Locally inspired spirits can serve established consumers while attracting people seeking alternatives to conventional varieties. Such innovation may support premium positioning and the development of specialist product ranges.

At the same time, spirits and wine are expected to experience more subdued growth than some other categories. The report links this outlook to changing preferences for lighter and healthier alternatives. Producers are therefore exploring low-alcohol, non-alcoholic and health-focused versions to maintain consumer interest.

Competition and Industry Structure

More than 10 companies are active in Australia's alcoholic drinks sector, while the five largest collectively account for approximately 50% of the sector, according to the report. This indicates a competitive environment in which established producers hold a substantial combined position, while other businesses operate across specific categories and product segments.

The leading companies identified include Accolade Wines Ltd, Diageo Plc, Coopers Brewery Ltd, Asahi Group Holdings Ltd and Kirin Holdings Co Ltd. Other companies named in the report include Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, Suntory Holdings Ltd, Treasury Wine Estates Ltd, Pernod Ricard Groupe and Brown-Forman Corp.

Competition extends across beer, cider and perry, RTDs, spirits and wine. Product innovation, distribution reach and brand positioning are important considerations as companies respond to health-conscious preferences and changing consumption occasions.

Outlook Through 2032

Australia's alcoholic drinks sector is projected to record moderate value growth through 2032. Beer is expected to remain the largest individual category, while off-trade retail continues to account for the majority of sales. Health awareness and responsible consumption are likely to influence product development, particularly in low- and non-alcoholic beverages.

RTDs, local flavoured spirits and improved-for-you formulations provide opportunities for differentiation. Meanwhile, on-trade venues may benefit from initiatives supporting nightlife and hospitality activity. Overall, the sector's direction will be shaped by the balance between established beverage preferences, affordability, convenience and consumers' changing expectations around alcohol consumption.
