Writing Dialogue That Sounds Natural: Practical Tips for New Authors

Dialogue is one of the quickest ways to bring a story to life, and one of the easiest places for a new writer to stumble. When it works, readers barely notice it. When it doesn’t, the whole scene feels stiff. Since strong dialogue is often what separates a draft from a book you’re proud to publish your book with, it’s worth learning how to get it right.

Listen to How People Really Talk
Real speech is messy. People interrupt each other, trail off, change the subject, and rarely say exactly what they mean. Spend a few days paying attention to conversations around you, in cafés, on public transport, or at family dinners. You’ll notice rhythm, hesitation, and shorthand that you can borrow, without copying anyone word for word.

Don’t Copy Real Speech Exactly
Fiction dialogue is speech with the boring parts removed. Skip the greetings, the small talk, and the “um” and “you know” unless they reveal something about the character. Every exchange should do at least one job: move the plot, reveal character, or build tension.

Give Each Character a Different Voice
If you could swap the speakers’ names and nothing would change, the voices aren’t distinct enough. Think about age, background, education, and mood. One character might speak in short, blunt sentences while another rambles or asks questions. Small differences in vocabulary and rhythm make a cast feel real.

Use Subtext
People often avoid saying what they truly feel. Two characters arguing about the dishes may really be arguing about trust. Letting the real issue sit beneath the surface gives dialogue depth and gives readers the pleasure of reading between the lines.

Keep Tags Simple
“Said” is nearly invisible to readers, which is exactly why it works. Fancy alternatives like “exclaimed” or “declared” tend to draw attention to the writing rather than the scene. Use action beats instead of extra tags when you want to show movement or emotion, such as a character setting down a cup before answering.

Watch Out for Info-Dumps
Having characters explain things they both already know, purely for the reader’s benefit, is a common trap. If the line starts with “As you know,” it probably needs a rewrite. Find a more natural way for the information to surface, such as through conflict or a character who genuinely doesn’t know.

Read It Aloud
Reading dialogue aloud is the fastest test. If you stumble over a line, or it sounds like something nobody would say, revise it. Better still, ask a friend to read the lines back to you while you listen.

Format Consistently
Start a new paragraph for each new speaker, keep punctuation inside the quotation marks, and be consistent with how you handle interruptions and trailing thoughts. Clean formatting keeps readers focused on the story rather than the mechanics.

Good dialogue takes practice, and most authors improve it significantly during revision. When your manuscript is polished and you’re ready for editing, design, and formatting, our professional publishing services can help you take the next steps while you keep full control of your work.
