UK Car Rental Market Accelerates Toward £10.6 Billion by 2035

As per Market Research Future, the UK car rental market is projected to more than double over the next decade, growing from USD 4,522.32 million in 2024 to USD 10,630 million by 2035 at a compound annual growth rate of 8.08 per cent. This growth reflects a confluence of factors: recovering tourism, changing patterns of vehicle ownership, and the digital transformation of the rental experience. The UK market, one of Europe's most mature, is nonetheless experiencing significant structural change as electric vehicles, subscription models, and online booking reshape how consumers access rental cars.

Tourism Recovery as a Primary Driver

The recovery of international tourism has been a powerful catalyst. With travel restrictions lifted, the UK tourism sector is projected to contribute around £200 billion to the economy, with a substantial portion allocated to transportation services. Tourists arriving at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester often seek the flexibility that rental cars provide, particularly for exploring areas beyond major cities where rail connections are limited. The rental companies that have invested in airport presence and multilingual service have captured a significant share of this demand.

The Shift to Electric Vehicles

Environmental awareness is reshaping fleet composition. Surveys indicate that around 45 per cent of consumers are willing to pay a premium for sustainable rental options, and rental companies have responded by expanding their electric and hybrid fleets. Hertz has partnered with electric vehicle manufacturers to accelerate fleet electrification, and Europcar has invested in charging infrastructure at major locations. The transition is not without challenges: range anxiety, charging infrastructure gaps, and higher upfront costs remain barriers, but the direction of travel is clear.

Digital Platforms Reshape Booking

Online booking has become the dominant channel, valued at USD 2,261.16 million in 2024, with offline booking retaining a significant but declining share. Consumers now expect to compare prices, select vehicles, and complete bookings through mobile apps and websites. The integration of digital payment systems and contactless vehicle access has streamlined the rental process, reducing the friction that once characterised airport counters. Approximately 60 per cent of consumers prefer using mobile apps for booking, a figure that continues to rise.

Subscription Services and Flexible Ownership

Subscription-based rental services are gaining traction, particularly among urban consumers who need occasional access to a vehicle without the costs and commitments of ownership. This model offers flexibility — users can switch vehicle types based on need — and predictable monthly costs. Europcar launched a subscription service aimed at urban customers, and other providers have followed. The model appeals to younger demographics who value experiences over assets and are comfortable with digital subscription management.

The SUV Dominance

SUVs hold the largest share of the vehicle type segment, reflecting consumer preference for space, comfort, and versatility. Economy vehicles also command a substantial share, catering to price-sensitive customers, while luxury vehicles are the fastest-growing segment, driven by increasing disposable income among renters and the desire for high-end experiences. The rise of social media has amplified demand for luxury vehicles, as consumers share their experiences online.

Urbanisation and Changing Mobility Patterns

Urbanisation is a structural driver. As more people migrate to cities, the demand for flexible transportation rises, and urban dwellers increasingly prefer renting vehicles for short-term needs rather than owning a car that is costly to park and insure. The UK's urban population is projected to grow by approximately 2.5 per cent annually, sustaining demand for short-term rentals. Flexible work arrangements are also influencing demand, as remote and hybrid workers seek occasional vehicle access for business trips or commuting.

Challenges and Opportunities

The market faces challenges. Economic uncertainty affects discretionary travel spending, and the cost of fleet electrification is substantial. Depreciation on electric vehicles has been higher than expected, affecting profitability. Competition from ride-hailing and car-sharing services continues to pressure traditional rental models. But opportunities abound: the integration of AI-driven pricing algorithms, the expansion of electric vehicle rental options, and the development of subscription models all offer growth pathways for companies that invest wisely.

The Outlook to 2035

The trajectory toward USD 10,630 million by 2035 assumes continued tourism recovery, growing demand for flexible mobility, and successful fleet electrification. The companies that thrive will be those that combine digital convenience, sustainable fleets, and competitive pricing. The UK market is mature, but maturity does not mean stagnation; it means that growth comes from innovation and service quality rather than from expansion into new territory.

For investors and operators, the UK car rental market offers a compelling opportunity. Its growth rate is robust, its structural drivers are sound, and its transformation is well underway.
